Access to Care for Mental Health, Intellectual/Developmental Disability, or Substance Abuse Services

Individuals in need of mental health, intellectual/developmental disability, or substance abuse services have several ways in which they can access needed services:

Smoky Mountain Center Access Line (1-800-849-6127) - Individuals in need of mental health, intellectual/developmental disability, or substance abuse services may call the Smoky Mountain Center (SMC) Access Line (1-800-849-6127) and receive a telephonic screening to determine the nature of the individual's needs and offer the individual a choice of appropriate treatment providers. Every attempt will be made to schedule an initial appointment with the chosen provider.

Private Treatment Provider - Individuals may seek services directly from a local treatment provider of their choice from SMC's Provider Network. To determine eligibility and register for services, either the provider or SMC will conduct a brief interview (in person or over the telephone) to get necessary information and to link with the caller's choice of provider.

Department Of Social Services - Individuals and families working with the Department of Social Services (DSS) may be referred for mental health, intellectual/developmental disability, or substance abuse services. Screening and assessment for Work First, Child Protective Services or other referrals will be arranged by DSS staff.

Health Care Providers - Individuals often discuss their need for mental health, intellectual/developmental disability, or substance abuse services with their Primary Care Physician or other health care provider. Such medical care providers may offer advice about the type of services they recommend, and may refer individuals to specific SMC Network Providers or to SMC (1-800-849-6127) to obtain an appointment for services. Persons in immediate life threatening emergencies should go to the nearest hospital Emergency Department or call 911. However, for non-life-threatening crises or emergencies, callers may call SMC (1-800-849-6127) to receive urgent or emergency services. SMC has contracted Mobile Crisis Service providers in each county that can see individuals rapidly in a safe setting in the community.
Serving individuals with mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse issues in Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, McDowell, Swain, Watauga and Wilkes Counties
