General Statement of the Job :
|
|
Under the supervision of the Consumer and Family Support Manager, the Consumer and Family Advisor will educate and advise enrollees and their families about mental health, substance abuse, and NC Innovations benefits and services. The Consumer and Family Advisor will assist in the development and dissemination of educational materials in partnership with other departments within Smoky Mountain Center. The Consumer and Family Advisor will help organize, plan, and present community forums designed to educate enrollees and stakeholders. The Consumer and Family Advisor will also have disability-specific responsibilities consistent with her or his experience.

Essential Job Functions :
|
|
SMC Consumer and Family Advisor will be available to talk with enrollees and family members individually and in group settings to answer questions and to provide education about services for all populations. SMC's Consumer and Family Support Unit will conduct community forums throughout the catchment area prior to implementation of the Waiver and periodically thereafter to educate enrollees and the community about the 1915 b/c Waiver. Topics that will be discussed with Enrollees, families, and community stakeholders include but are not limited to an overview of the 1915 b/c Medicaid Waiver, differences in services and benefits between traditional Medicaid and the 1915 b/c Medicaid Waiver, how to access services, emergency services and how they are accessed, Innovations Waiver for individuals with intellectual/ developmental disabilities, participant direction of services, Community Guide services, Supports Intensity Scale (SIS) and Supports Needs Matrix (SNM), signs of mental illness, Mental Health and Substance Abuse services, appeals and grievances, and recipient rights. This position will help plan, organize and present information at these community forums with other Smoky Mountain Center departments who have expertise.
This position will help the Community Collaboration Department identify enrollees and families for participation on the Consumer and Family Advisory Committee as they locate potential individuals that would like to work in this capacity. This position will also help the Consumer and Family Support Team Manager by participating on cross functional teams as needed. This position also will perform disability group-specific duties consistent with his or her experience.

Minimum Training and Qualifications :
|
|
HS Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field preferred. Lived experience with MH, SA or I/DD issues and with receipt of services and supports as a consumer or family member desired.
|
|
Physical Requirements :
|
|
This position experiences a high degree of mental exertion. This position regularly handles situations that require extensive evaluation and critical thinking. It is imperative that this position be able to work with others to problem solve complex situations.
|
|
Knowledge of Job :
|
|
General knowledge of the methods and principles of recovery, person centered thinking/planning, system of care and self-direction is needed. Having good customer service skills are essential. The ability to establish appropriate and respectful relationships/ partnerships with persons with a wide range of disabilities and their families. Includes the ability to interact professionally and effectively with persons who are upset and who disagree. Knowledge of the laws, regulations, and policies which govern human services. Is able to express ideas clearly and concisely orally and in writing. The ability to work effectively as a team member and under the direction of the Consumer and Family Support Team Manager. Must have life experience with MH/IDD/SA issues as a consumer or family member.

Salary :
|
|
Grade/Step is determined by qualification and experience of candidate. Position is full-time hourly with comprehensive benefits. Hourly pay rate is $13.19/hr. Work schedule is 37.5 hours per week. This position is not exempt from overtime compensation.
